What Is a Subcutaneous Injection?
A subcutaneous (sub-Q) injection places medication into the layer of fat between the skin and muscle, allowing slow and steady absorption.
Best Injection Sites
- Abdomen (avoid 2 inches around belly button)
- Upper outer thigh
- Back of upper arm
Rotate sites each time and inject at least 1–2 inches away from the previous spot.
Supplies Needed
- Medication vial
- Sterile syringe and needle
- Alcohol swabs
- Sharps container (puncture-resistant)
Preparing for Injection
- Wash hands thoroughly.
- Gather supplies on a clean surface.
- Check medication name, dose, and expiration date.
- Clean vial stopper with alcohol swab.
Filling the Syringe
- Pull air into syringe equal to your dose.
- Insert needle into vial and inject air.
- Turn vial upside down and draw medication.
- Remove air bubbles and adjust to correct dose.
Administering the Injection
- Clean injection site with alcohol and allow to dry.
- Pinch fold of skin.
- Insert needle at 45-degree angle.
- Slowly push plunger to deliver medication.
- Remove needle and apply gentle pressure.
After the Injection
- Dispose of needle in sharps container.
- Record date, time, dose, and site.
- Never reuse needles.
